Game Haven will this Sunday host this year’s final Junior Golf tournament and end-of-year awards gala at its modern Mibawa Golf Course in Bvumbwe, Thyolo.

Junior golf committee publicist Dingaan Chirwa said the tournament, expected to attract 60 young golfers, will be jointly sponsored by parents and Game Haven.

“It is a special tournament in that it will be the last for the year (2013). Apart from the awards, it will be spiced up with festive activities such as the presence of Santa Cruz,” said Chirwa.

He said the awards will include players’ player of the year, most improved golfers, most appearances and youngest player.

Chirwa said since the Golf Union of Malawi (GUoM) initiated the programme, they have had 86 junior golfers making a total of 197 appearances in six tournaments.

“That is an average of 33 players in each tournament, with each player making an average of 2.3 appearances.

“A total of 40 golfers played only once, 11 played twice, 13 played three times, 14 played four times, seven played five times and only one played in all the six tournaments.

The aim of the programme is to develop golf from the grass roots and prepare young golfers for future international events such as 2016 Brazil Olympics, All Africa Challenge Trophy and also identify two up-and-coming golfers (male and female) to represent the country at the British Junior Open Championship whose expenses will be met by R & A.
